High Court To Hear Case On War Powers

CLICK TO READ: High Court To Hear Case On War Powers by Charles Lane:

LANE: "The Supreme Court yesterday agreed to rule on the legality of the Bush administration's planned military commissions for accused terrorists, setting up what could be one of the most significant rulings on presidential war powers since the end of World War II.President Bush has claimed broad power to conduct the war against al Qaeda and said that questions about the detention of suspected terrorists, their interrogation, trial and punishment are matters for him to decide as commander in chief."

THE UNKNOWN CANDIDATE: When GWB was up for election and then re-election last year, I drove everyone within ear shot crazy with my dire warnings about the effect this man's election could have on the Supreme Court. At the time, I was fearing mostly for women's rights issues, civil rights issues and most of the other issues that are about to be up-for-grabs in our newly Conservative Supreme Court.

But I never anticipated that our core democratic values would be up for grabs, mainly because I never anticipated that I would be living in an America which, by all rights, can no longer be considered a democracy and is looking more and more like a facist state by the day. This is going to be One Crucial Supreme Court Ruling, my friends. If you are at all religious, now's the time to pray like your life depended on it. Because it does.
