The Great Diplomat: Bolton threatens U.S. funding for U.N.

Bolton threatens U.S. funding for U.N.

"WASHINGTON, DC, United States (UPI) -- The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, John Bolton, said the United States should withhold U.N.-member dues if reform isn`t made to his liking.

The U.S. dues make up 22 percent of the U.N. budget.

Bolton is pushing for a number of changes in the world body including giving more power to the secretary general, which developing nations see as a power grab, the Boston Globe reports...."

There are over 100 countries in the UN. My first question would be why does the American taxpayer need to pay 22%? How did we get into this predicament?

In business and government, things revert to the "golden rule": the people with the most gold get to make the rules. If the UN expects USA to pay the most, then we should have some say how the money is spent.

The only "Golden Rule" I know is "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Bolton represents the selfish interests and bully diplomacy of the Neocon regime in Washington--he does not represent the majority of Americans or what they want: peace. He also does not believe in the United Nations as a peacekeeper in the world and has voiced his disdain for the organization.

Your comment misses the point. He is out to destroy the UN, not work with it. He cares nothing about American taxpayers or what they want.

As for why we pay 22%--the U.S., pre GWB, has historically striven to give as much as possible to worthy causes. It is party of the American legacy. It is irrelevant to the issue: the U.S. (much to my dismay) is becoming a rogue nation, ignoring international laws concerning nuclear arms reduction, the environment, and torture, among others. Such a nation does NOT deserve to dictate to the United Nations--especially when it does care an iota about the concerns of other nations. John Bolton's behavior is morally reprehensible.

Bush, you will recall, faced a tough battle in trying to get Bolton approved by Congress for his present position. So, instead of letting Congress hold hearings and vote, he appointed Bolton to a temporary term during a recess. Everything Bolton's critics feared are now coming to pass.

Read "The Project for the New American Century". It will explain the true motives of Bushco. Don't be fooled by the media spin and administration rhetoric.
