You shouldn't be surprised. Nothing should surprise you anymore.
But you oughta be damned angry. The government has no right to spy on innocent Americans and collect our private information secretly.
It must be stopped.
As for checks and balances to make sure the government is not abusing it's powers? Forget about it.

WASHINGTON, May 11 — Congressional Republicans and Democrats alike demanded answers from the Bush administration on Thursday about a report that the National Security Agency has collected records of millions of domestic phone calls, even as President Bush assured Americans that their privacy is "fiercely protected."
The Shrub must think we're as stupid as he is. "Not mining"? That's exactly what they are doing. Our privacy is "fiercely protected?" "Fiercely violated is more accurate. Privacy rights? Under this cabal, they are non-existent.
"We're not mining or trolling through the personal lives of millions of innocent Americans," Mr. Bush said before leaving for a commencement address in Mississippi. "Our efforts are focused on links to Al Qaeda and their known affiliates."
