Senior State Department Official Resigns over Nuclear Proliferation

The Washington Post Reports that "Robert Joseph, the State Department's senior arms control and security official, has resigned.

Joseph submitted his resignation to President Bush amid uncertainty about the future of negotiations to curb nuclear programs in Iran and North Korea. Talks on both fronts have moved slowly, with U.N. penalties against both countries showing limited results. The talks are in recess...."

The only serious solution to the problem of nuclear proliferation will come through cooperation of the world's democracies, specifically...

Let's face it...what we're doing now CLEARLY isn't working.

Er, that is exactly what George Bush is doing now .... spreading democracy because, according to him, democracies don't wage wars on other democracies. Your strategy, from what I can see, is no different than Bush's -- which you yourself declare to be "CLEARLY" not working.

Sorry, Gary, no sale. You don't inspire other nations to become democracies by refusing to talk with them unless they agree to talk about becoming a democracy. You negotiate with your enemies to find common ground, not to impose democracy. Witness Iraq. Democracy imposed by the U.S. on a country ill equipped for it. A disaster.

Your logic is flawed, to say the least.

Unknown Candidate,

Bush is not spreading democracy. You can't hold a gun to someone to force democracy. And of course the fact that he's the most bumbling president in my lifetime doesn't help. Iraq is an example of how to do everything wrong.

And just to correct your assumption, I'm not advocating that we don't talk with our enemies (dictators), just that we don't treat them as equals. You talk to dictators in the same way that you talk to someone who is holding hostages, which is exactly the situation. But to seat dictators adjacent to legitimate democracies in a world forum legitimized them and de-legitimizes us.

So I encourage you to study the proposal closer...you may find that it actually accomplishes what you want....legitimate dialog.
