Experts Dismiss Scare Over Bird Flu

CLICK TO READ: Experts Dismiss Scare Over Bird Flu by Diane Chun, The Gainesville Sun

More scare tactics at work? Gary Butcher, a man of apparently impeccable credentials, is spending his time speaking to panic-stricken govenment officials and industry groups, in an attempt to dispell the myths of avian influena, or "bird flu":

"'The emphasis of all my work has changed to dealing with this madness,' Butcher said Friday, while briefly back at his office on the UF campus in Gainesville. 'Realistically, avian influenza is not a threat to people, but everywhere you go, it has turned into a circus.'

Dr. Marc Siegel, a practicing internist and associate professor of medicine at the New York University School of Medicine, is one physician who isn't buying into the scare scenario.

'If anything is contagious right now, it's judgment clouded by fear,' Siegel said.

And if Americans are scared of avian flu now, Siegel continues, 'imagine what will happen if a single scrawny, flu-ridden migratory bird somehow manages to reach our shores.'

That, he maintains, is how the fear epidemic - as opposed to a flu pandemic - spreads."

Abu Ghraib general says fault goes high

CLICK TO READ: Seattle Post Intelligencer: Abu Ghraib general says fault goes high by Sam Skolnik

"Brig. Gen. Janis Karpinski, the highest-ranking Army officer to be punished for the Abu Ghraib prison scandal, said Tuesday night that blame for the incident should go as high as Vice President Dick Cheney and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld."

Well, heck (said with my best Bushie drawl), WE knew that. It has become clear as the whites of the insurgents' eyes--this administration espouses, condones, and promotes torture. Even though it has been proven not to work as a method of gleaning information. Even though it is against international law. Even though it is immoral and reprehensible. And, worst of all, while wrapping pro-torture in a rationale of "keeping America safe", our soldiers are put at at even greater risk--if captured, they are now sure to be treated reciprocally. Not to mention the fact that our torture policies are accomplishing the insurgents recruiting for them, putting all of our troops at even greater risk.

Are we, as Americans, willing to allow this to continue in our names?

Food Stamp Cuts Are On Table

CLICK TO READ: Washington Post:Food Stamp Cuts Are On Table by Jonathan Weisman

The food stamp measure is just one of several provisions in an expansive Congressional budget-cutting package that critics say unfairly targets the poor and disadvantaged, especially poor children.

"House Republicans are pushing to cut tens of thousands of legal immigrants off food stamps, partially reversing President Bush's efforts to win Latino votes by restoring similar cuts made in the 1990s."

And that's just the beginning.

"The Senate is also set to vote on its version of the budget-cutting package, which would not cut food stamps. The smaller measure, with $39 billion in savings, has broad reach, affecting Medicare, Medicaid, agriculture programs, private pension plans and energy."

And there's more where that came from. It really all boils down to the fact that fiscal responsibility is once again falling on the shoulders of those least able to bear it. And the richest 1% of our citizens? They get more than a pass. They get another tax break. Wow, ain't Bush-onomics great?

"The problem is the interrelationship between cutting taxes, which no matter what you do will be viewed as cutting taxes for the rich, and reducing programs for the poor," said moderate Rep. Michael N. Castle (R-Del.). "It's that simple."

Sure is. Compassionate Conservativism strikes again.

"Harry Reid's so-called 'stunt' on the Senate floor this past Tuesday - invoking Rule 21 to create a closed session, during which he demanded an investigation into how we were dragged to war in Iraq - brought the issue of the never-found weapons of mass destruction back into the daylight. It's about damned time.
This ball of thorns is three years old now, and we have come nowhere near addressing its roots.

Recall, if you will, George W. Bush's State of the Union address from January of 2003. In that speech, he told us that Iraq was in possession of 26,000 liters of anthrax, 38,000 liters of botulinum toxin, 500 tons of sarin, mustard and VX nerve agent (500 tons equaling one million pounds, by the way), 30,000 munitions to deliver the stuff, mobile biological weapons labs, and uranium from Niger for use in Iraq's advanced nuclear weapons program.

The page on the White House web site detailing the existence of all this stuff is still there, by the way. None of the weapons they described in such dire tones actually exist, but that page is still sitting there in all its glory."

An Open Letter to All Progressive Organizations

I was talking to a university student this morning about why more people don't turn out for peaceful protests against the Bush administration's policies and the War in Iraq. She brought up an interesting point that should be considered by those organizations involved in conceiving these events. Over half of the people in our coutnry are middle class or lower class. They can't AFFORD to leave work in order to attend a protest for risk of losing their jobs should they do so. As a result, the current protest population is composed largely of upper-class whites.

The protests organized for today have asked people to "stand down" and leave their jobs in order to attend an event. My suggestion to progessive organizations who are frustrated by low turnout: In planning your events, think "inclusive". How do you help those who WANT to particpate do so, given the fact that many of them are near the poverty level and cannot just "take off from work" any time they like. More candle-light vigils perhaps? More weekend protests? Or perhaps a whole NEW kind of protest devised specifically to ENCOURAGE the inclusion of these Americans?

Progressive organizations are doing a fairly good job of talking about the problems of the middle class and the poor. But they have been sorely lacking in policies and actions to help them. The middle and lower classes of this country have traditionally been the base of progressive organizations. But, due to neglect, they have become disinfranchised.

Thanks to the policies of the Bush regime, more middle class Americans are falling into the lower class, while the divide between the wealthy and the middle class is widening at an alarming rate. Progressive organizations must both address these concerns in their policies and find ways to help these forgotten citizens become engaged in the progressive movement. If they can find a way to do so, their efforts will be rewarded significantly.

READ THE ARTICLE ABOVE AND WEEP--
Ladies, get ready to kiss your abortion rights goodbye. And, the rest of you had better be paying attention as well. Based on early information about Alito, every hair on our collective bodies should be standing on end. Alito's legal opinions seem to be far from mainstream. According to Ben Brandsel of MoveOn.org, here's a summary of just some of the core protections Alito would threaten:

"BASIC RIGHTS FOR WORKING FAMILIES--
As a judge on the Appeals Court, Alito issued a ruling to gut the Family and Medical Leave Act, which guarantees most workers up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave to care for a loved one in an emergency. The Supreme Court effectively overturned that ruling in 2003—but if Alito were on the Supreme Court he would pose a grave threat to the basic rights of working families.

CIVIL RIGHTS (in the workplace and beyond)--
In separate cases, Alito wrote dissenting opinions that would have made it essentially impossible to prove employment discrimination based on race or disability. He was overruled and harshly criticized by his colleagues, but if he were on the Supreme Court he could turn back the clock on decades of progress in securing civil rights for minorities and the disabled.

A WOMAN'S RIGHT TO CHOOSE--
Alito's judicial record and published views make him widely regarded as a sure vote to overturn Roe v. Wade. The extremist anti-abortion group Operation Rescue (who opposed Harriet Miers) responded to Alito's nomination today by saying: "Roe's days are numbered...We are trusting that we are now on the fast-track to derailing Roe v. Wade as the law of the land."7 If Alito were on the Supreme Court, reproductive freedom would be in serious jeopardy.

PRIVACY AND CIVIL LIBERTIES--
In one significant case, Alito wrote a dissenting oppinion that would have allowed an unauthorized strip search of a woman and her 10 year-old daughter, in their own home, without a warrant. Again, Alito was outvoted and strongly criticized by his fellow judges, but if he were to join Thomas and Scalia on the Supreme Court he would pose a grave threat to civil liberties and individual freedoms."
